Build Community Not Data Centers!

Let’s support thriving and resilient Vermont communities and push back against Big Tech.

What do we want?

Our Vision:

A world where communities and the natural world thrive as we build toward a Just Transition, free from the threats of Big Tech!

Our Goals:

  • Short-term

    • Pass town-level resolutions and bylaw changes that will make communities in VT inhospitable to data centers and send the message to decision-makers that we want statewide policy passed.

    • Pass statewide legislation to protect Vermont from the harms of AI data centers.

  • Long-term:

    • No AI data centers in New England! Currently, we are building toward a regional coalition.

What are data centers?

Data centers are large warehouses that store computer servers, chips, and networking equipment. Data centers have existed for years, but we’re currently seeing the rapid expansion of large, energy-intensive data centers built for artificial intelligence (AI).

Why is action needed?

Data centers are:

  • Creating additional reliance on fossil fuels and putting stress on our already limited electric grid.

  • Using vast amounts of water. A single data center can use up to 5 million gallons of water a day.

  • Raising ratepayers' electric bills as Big Tech makes deals with utility companies that force ratepayers to pay the cost of companies' increased energy use.

  • Often built in working-class, poor, and Black and brown communities.

  • Causing serious public health risks, including cancer and asthma, by burning diesel fuel for backup power.

  • Taking millions in tax breaks that could be used to fund our schools, climate goals, and social services.
